The movie begins depicting story of a single mother and daughter from poor socioeconomic backgrounds, striving to make life worthy of living. The mother does various cooking and cleaning jobs through the day to earn adequate to funds for her daughter’s education, meanwhile daughter is unmotivated due to the bleak chances she sees in her future. The mother takes the responsibility to instill in her daughter a positive attitude by initiative and insight from others.
The movie begins with the pathetic plight of a mother and daughter from a very poor socio-economic background, living in a tiny one room apartment in Trivandrum as they try to survive each day based on the many jobs Sujatha (Manju Warrier) has to perform each day to survive. Before her daughter wakes up, she runs to a family's house to clean up the messes they've made from the previous evening, doing their dishes, washing their laundry, mopping their floors, preparing their breakfasts and packing their lunch before locking their door, ringing their doorbell as their wake up call and running back home to prepare a breakfast and lunch for her own child and to send her off to school. Throughout the movie, Sujatha has a great smile on her face and tries very hard to provide for her daughter since her husband died four years ago but her daughter mocks her as just being a lowly servant who doesn't have any money to buy her daughter nice shoes or a bookbag.
