The caption for ANAND, manchi coffee lanti cinema*, meaning 'A film like a nice coffee' sums up what it is. It leaves a wonderful after taste. And makes you ask for more of it.

But more than that ANAND is essentially about the celebration of human spirit.

Roopa (Kamalini) loses her family in an accident when she was a child. Roopa survives all by herself growing up to be an independent woman. She yearns for the security, matrimony offers, probably wanting to fill the vacuum of loneliness that has been haunting her for many years now. So, even as her instincts occassionally warn her of the trappings of getting married into a conservative Indian family, she prepares for the D-day, trusting her fiance Rahul to stand by her, in her hour of need. But soon it dawns on her that she may be submitting her soul to someone, who is a slave of the dogma ridden household and who can only empathize with her, but do not really have what it takes to uphold her self-respect. So, she just walks out on the groom.

Elsewhere, Singaraju, who was responsible for the gruesome accidental death of Roopa's fmily, is guilt ridden for the unfortunate incident and had lost his sanity. And his son ANAND just returns from the USA in search of his prospective life partner. As fate would have it, ANAND bumps into Roopa even as she was breaking free of the shackles of her proposed marraige.

In his very first encounter with Roopa, ANAND develops a great respect for her and wants to get closer to her. Yet, he also fears her wrath if she learns of his connection to her tragic past despite Roopa's confession that she does not hold any resentment, for whoever was responsible for the accident. The film from that point deals with ANAND and Roopa's reconciliation to each other's sensibilities and even more importantly the discovery of their undying love and respect for each other.

All the characters in ANAND are very human and very real. They perfectly complement the way the other characters talk and behave. And it is this duality of the film that makes it very endearing. That also makes ANAND a very honest, sincere, yet thoroughly entertaining film which is certain to win and remain in the hearts of all movie lovers for a long long time.
